Essex & Eastern Counties Schoolboy Champions - Tez Everard, Jake Gibson, Brad Cockett and Nathan Lucas will be boxing on Saturday 4th February at Hannakins Farm, Billericay in the National Pre-Quarter Finals against the Southern Counties Champions.

They will be boxing to try and gain a win into the next round which will be held in Bristol on 12th Feb.

Just before we left the building tonight, a top and well respected Essex ABA Official remarked "This show was one of the best I have ever been too - and the support for your boxers is unbeleivable"..!

Billericay ABC would like to thank everyone that helped today, especially all those that were there early helping set up and again staying late to help tidy up, including a lot of the boxers as well.

Chris Kelly got all the lads ready and warmed up, speaking to the coaches about any faults he picked up on and allowing them to try and help adjust things before they got into the ring, a massive thanks to "Team Bean".

The ladies on the door ( Kim, Jacqui and Rach ) as always done a great job of welcoming the guests, many of whom commented on this. Thanks also again to Rach for the raffles )

Elaine put together some fantastic food for the boxers, coaches and officials and had it all under control all evening, thanks Elaine, but you have set a president now, too.

Thanks to all those that helped on the doors, Tony, Trev and co.

Jimmy, Jim, H, Dean G, Dean S, Kev, Kip, Brad, Mark, Geoff, Kev, Anna and family, Felix all doing loads during the day and the eveining to help out.

What can we say about the boxing tonight......

Every single Billericay Boxer gave it their all tonight, 120% from all of them...!

When you get 5 Boxers into a major Final and all 5 win to become county and regional champions, it is a great accomplishment for any club, well done lads..!

George "The Rocket" Stephenson picked up Boxer of the Night award after a 100 mile an hour non stop bout, that got stopped in round 2. George lost to this same lad a few months back, BEFORE he found that self beleif, that certainly came out tonight. George has spent weeks preparing for this bout, so all take notice - Train Hard and Fast.

Luke Hasson was let down at the scales, when his opponent from Castle Boxing Club came in 5kg over..! Luckily the ever helpfull Chadwell Squad had a boxer ( J. Healey ) that fitted the bill and we had Luke back on, A great show of skill from both boxers.

Richard Temple looked strong, stepping up the workrate before stopping his opponent ( L.Worster ) in the 3rd round.

Tez Everard started cautiouslyagainst Chatteris boxer R. Ducker, before dominating the bout, then taking the Eastern Counties Schoolboy Title.

Brad Cockett boxed a taller lad and wasted no time switching gears and finding the speed and power to beat the classy Casey Durning from Cambridge. We know casy from a previous Billericay show, a very nice and respectful lad.

Jake Gibson, so needed a win, he has been on the end of so many close decisions, so it was good to see him step up everything, not taking any chances. Well done Jake and thanks for helping clear up the changing rooms, a GOOD attitude and all round smashing lad that has grown up and matured in front of us all over the last 6 months.

Jake Robinson, had, we thought the toughest bout of his career ahead of him tonight, but managed to find that drive and passion to dig deep and take a good win over Shea Nightingale, who is one of the best 50kg boxers throughout the region. Well done again Jake.

Joe Adams, had a change of opponent last thing on Friday as his original opponent had gone sick. Joe boxed well and a lot of people thought he may of nicked the decision, either way, it was very close and am sure a rematch will be on the cards. Joe came over later and asked for this himself.

Charlie Buffin now on his 10th bout, needed to step up a level and box a more experienced ( 29 bouter ) opponent to give him a tester before the open clas championships start in March. We accepted a bout against the ever ready Nick Tipler. Both boxers were well matched for the first 2 and a half rounds, the scores were virtually the same. After the final bell Tipler won on a majority points decision.

Ted ( Milling ) Brand also had a tough bout, against the skillful southpaw Ryan Ayton from the Centurians Boxing Club, ( Colchester Barracks). Ted pulled out another full on win after a performance that showed pure heart..!

All in all 5 CHAMPIONS added to the ever growing list

8 out of 10 wins, with 2 very close losses.

And a great night of amateur boxing, well done lads..!

In all seriousness, a big thank you must go out to Mike Ward today, Mike took on the role as funding officer recently and has worked hard and long hours to help bring in the much needed funds to support the club and help take the boxers to destinations all over Europe. Above, Mike with the Billericay team at their evening BBQ out in Lithuania after their sucessful tour and 2 days of intense sparring and training, which was partially funded by the kind sponsors and parents of the club.

Next stop for the Boxers - Canada....! A 5 day tour with 2 shows and every billericay Boxer will get the chance to compete.

Well Done Billericay's Joe Adams & Jake Robinson

Well done Joe & Jake, both lads boxed well this evening at the Community Stadium, Colchester, against some top quality opposition.

Joe was on his 2nd bout against Uxbridge's rangy and very stylish C. Rose-Nicholls, who made his ring debut. Joe was on fire, forcing the Uxbridge lad to concede 3 standing counts during the bout, whilst still managing to hold his boxing together before winning on a unanamous points decisison. Credit must go to Rose-Nicholls for digging deep and battling to the bell, a very good set of prospects.

Jake has really been training hard lately and improving with every gym session. Jake was up against the very strong and fit Tommy Smith from Harwich, Jake started fast and then both boxers were still going at 100 miles an hour throughout the 3 rounds. Jake settled a little in the third round, and boxed fantastically before taking the win on a unanamous points decision. A very fast action packed bout, between 2 very good boxers.

Both Joe & Jake, had some very tough sparring when they went to Lithuania, but, it is when you see then perform so well back home, you realise just how much they have learnt from these sessions.

Thanks to all those that came along to support the lads tonight, including Luke, Charlie, Sean and Joe and Jakes family.

And finally, a very good ending to a great night of boxing, Braintree's Tal Singh, a firm favourite with the Billericay coaches, went out and got that win that he so deserves tonight, well done to everyone at Braintree and especially Tal for digging deep and getting the reward for all his hard work.

Richard Temple lost in the Final of the Essex schools today on a majority decision, the fight was awarded to his opponent after a very good display of boxing from both sides. Richard put his foot down in the 2nd and then looked to have doubled the pace in the 3rd and seemed to have done more than enough to win, but 2 of the judges disagreed as the 3rd judge shook his head in disbelief.

A big shout tonight for all 16 boxers today...

" The Home of Champions" - Every single one of them...!

Everyone trained hard to get into the Championships throughout the Chrismas period and everyone that managed to box today done themselves very proud, the club had a huge support from all the other boxers associated with the club today and showed a massive will and determination to win.

Cory had his first full bout and when he got out of the ring, i was touched to see his team mates come over to him, he done fantastically well for his first bout in a very busy and big venue.

Brett, Luke and George were also very brave and mature, when all 3 went into the championships at the same weight, it is always a shame when this happens, as someone has to lose, but again the bouts for them were both very evenly contested and could have gone either way, as it always is in the gym. All 3 done well and conducted themselves with plenty of respect. All 3 boxed their hearts out and all 3 deserve plenty of praise for this.

Richard Temple made his debut in a Billericay vest and boxed his way into the Essex Schoolboys Final, which will be in Dagenham next week after stopping his opponent in the 2nd round.

Charlie Buffin had a match against the ever skillful and strong Charlie Boom from Chalvedon. A cracking bout that could have gone either way, Buffin just winning by 2 points.

Ted "No Fear" Brand was in the Final against the unbeaten Richard Ogunwobi from Berry Boys, again both boxers gave it everything they had with Ted coming out on top 17 - 15.

Joe Adams was in the final against the very strong J. Hearns from Essex Uni, Joe boxed out of his skin making his first full ring debut and became Metropolitan Champion after a great performance winning 28 - 16.

Callums opponent pulled out.

Thanks to all the Boxers that came along today and for preparing so well, including the early meet at the gym. Also, thanks to the parents and coaches for all their hard work and support.

Thanks to Dean G, Mike Ward, Jim and Faye for their help today. Also Con for helping keep the team together and warming the boys up, its good to have the seniors helping, when all the schoolboys look up to him.

Congratulations to Ted Brand, aged 15, being nominated and winning a prestigious Jack Petchey Achievement Award.
Ted wants to join the Para's, but needed some help in 'Life Skills', so the Billericay Boxing Club Committee decided to help him along and really test him out.
Billericay ABC made him captain to a trip in Lithuania and let him organise, help and advise other members of the squad, during a long weekend of training, boxing action and fun.

Ted was outstanding, putting others before himself and showing great leadership skills throughout the trip. An outstanding individual that will do well in his chosen career.

Billericay Boxing Club have 16 for Essex Championships

Billericay will be entering a record breaking 16 Schoolboy boxers into the Essex Championships on Sunday 8th January 2012, at the Harlow Stadium, competing in the Essex rounds of the Open & Novice Classes for age groups 1996 - 2000.
Above are all 16 after another grueling training session at the Lake Meadows boxing gym on Tuesday 20th December.

The gym is open throughout the Christmas period as the boxers finalise their preperations for the Championships. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, the boxers will be put through their drills until they are all at peak fitness and ready to box at the highest level.
Billericay Boxing Club has loads of youngsters coming through the ranks at present and would expect to have another 10 boxers joining the elite schoolboy carded squad next year.
Most of the squad above have recently visited Ireland, Lithuania, Glasgow and a team match in Yorkshire boxing in some very intimidating venues. The boxers have picked up some valuable experience from these trips and will be hoping to use this experience to do well in the Championships.

Billericay Boxing Club will be putting in an amazing record breaking 16 entries into the Essex Schoolboy and Metropolitan Novice Championships on Sunday 8th January 2012.
A team photo is planned for Tuesday, so please bring your blue kits to the gym.

Billericay have always done well in these Championships and on Sunday 8th, we would expect to take titles across all weight and classes, within the Essex area. The current carded squad has strength in depth, with plenty of young prospects knocking on the door to join the elite carded boxing team.

Brett Venables made his debut along with Brad Cockett in the Essex ABA Vest this evening when they both competed in the team match v the Home Counties.
Both boxers were called up at late notice to box in supporting bouts.

Brett, who has been unwell recently, had a phone call this afternoon and jumped at the chance to compete. Brett boxed in a skills match against the very skillful Ben Trainer from the Cheshunt boxing club, from the home counties. Both boxers oozed class and can both be very proud of a putting on such a great display to open the show up.

Brad, boxed against Chadwells Johnny Doherty. Brad, who is one of the most improved in the gym lately, never really showed us what he can do this evening, but it was still a close and low scoring bout with Doherty winning on points.

Billericay Boxing Club - Ireland 2011.

First up from our 5 was Joe Adams in an exhibition match, Joe boxed well with a good mix of aggression and long shots.

Tez was next up with a great display of technical boxing dominating his opponent over 3 rounds to take a convincing win, well done Tez.

Brad Cockett showed great boxing skills in the next bout for Billericay taking a clear win against a tough opponent, well done Brad.

Charlie Buffin was next out and had his work cut out with a very tough opponent from the host club, this was a full on bout with neither lad letting up for the whole 3 rounds Charlie dug deep in the last round and just did enough to take the decision, great bout Charlie.

Final bout of the night for us was Joe Giles, his opponent took the win without any complaints.

Summing up, 5 boxers in the ring, in a very noisy, intimidating environment, they were all brilliant and deserve far more credit than they ever really receive, these boys were heros, well done..!

A great tour with 5 very good performances and some great memories for the kids, which is what it is all about.

Billericay will be taking a squad of boxers to compete in Dublin this Thursday. Ireland has produced some of the biggest names in boxing over the recent years, so the Billericay Squad will need to be figthing fit and ready to compete against some of the toughest boxers in the world. Parents will also be treated to a European Gold v Bronze Medalist Junior clash.

The gym will be closed on Sunday 11th December, but open every other night next week

Conor - Misses out on National Final Place.

Conor Ward today lost his bid to make the National Finals of the Senior Novice Championships, when he lost on points to the very talented London and Southern Novice Champion, Tom McKeouwn from the strong Hollington Boxing Club.
Conor would be the first to admit he was not on 100% form today after a week of being unwell with a heavy cold, that hampered his normal preperations. Conor fought hard, but it just did not come together today.
Conor was very upset, which is understandable, but this was really out of his hands.
Conor is a credit to his family and friends, a warrior of the highest standard, never giving up and looked to be battling against the cold, the opposition and possibly the the remarkable scoring system today.
"Everyone has a bad day at the office, but the quality and potential of this boxer will shine through soon enough - 1 National OPEN CLASS Semi Final last season, 1 National OPEN CLASS quarter Final this season, 1 National Semi Final this season, Beating the Scottish National Novice Champion, The favourite from the southern areas already, This boxer is an inspiration to the rest of the squad" - Les Cooke.

Billericay Boxers dominate in South East London.

Billericay Boxing Club took 3 determined lads deep into South - East London this evening to box at Catford and came away with all 3 undefeated....!

Cory Bohea took a bout with just 30 minutes notice, YES - 30 MINUTES....!
We were in the car and had left home when we got the call from the matchmakers asking if Cory could take part in a skills contest as the other boys opponent had just pulled out. Cory had no hesitation and took the bout, so a quick detour was set into the sat nav and we shot over to pick Cory up.
Cory was matched against a local boy, J.Wyatt from the very tough Danson Youth Boxing Club. Wyatt flew out in the first round and piled on the pressure, until Cory found his range and started to box with pure class. Long jabs and a fantastic defence, with quick and accurate counters. Three rounds of pure skill from both boxers, what a fantastic start to both of their boxing careers and what a great advert for amateur boxing.
As Cory stepped out of the ring, he said "I can't wait for to do that again"..!

Brad Cockett had his first taste of boxing a southpaw when he came up against Sevenoaks skillful and unbeaten B.Friend. Brad always looked calm and picked his shots carefully, but Friend also looked very confident and the bout was very, very close up until Brad stepped the pace up in the last round, before getting a unanimous points win over a very good opponent. I feel there is a lot more to come from Brad yet, so lets see how well he can perform in Ireland next week. Brad commented "I don't think Les was very happy" - ( Well theres nothing new there then ) Well done Brad, I can confirm Les was very happy..! As were we all...!

Ted "No-Fear" Brand at last made his full bout ring debut when he boxed against the strong and skillful M.Ibrahini from Croydon's tough Dynamo Boxing Club. Ted had been let down on previous occasions when the different opponents had pulled out, but this time Ted was actually up there at last. The first 2 rounds were again very close and not much in the scoring at all, until the third round when Ted looked to land a few more of the cleaner jabs, that may just have swung it. Ted is a firm favourite with the Billericay Squad for his tenacious attitude, again Ted showed this in the last round and gave it everything he had to win his first bout. Ibrahini was a very good boxer with good skills so well done Ted and no nose bleed either, what a result..!

It is not often that you can take 3 boxers into a tough South East London environment and come away unbeaten, so well done Billericay. Thanks to all the parents and to Jake & Karl for their support and help with getting the boxers ready. A great team.

There was some very good news back from base this evening regarding funding for the Canada trip, more news will follow soon....! A very good day for everyone connected to Billericay.

The trip of a lifetime for the young Billericay Boxing Squad became a little bit closer today, after some very sucessfull negotiations with one the top clubs in Canada. The end of the season show might be overseas. We are still looking for some sponsorship to help take the team to Canada. We will be aiming to meet at Stansted by 7.30am on Thursday 8th December, meeting at the usual coffee bar. Please do not be late, we will be aiming to clear customs as soon as we can.

Please contact the airline and print off your boarding passes NOW.

You will be responsible for your own luggage, you are allowed 1 piece of hand luggage free of charge, please check the airlines policy for the maximum sizes and weights allowed.

Boxers will need to take their own headguards, gumshields, towel, vest, shorts, protectors, handwraps, sports socks and boots.

Boxers should be getting weighed in on the Thursday, anyone not on the agreed weight targets will be withdrawn from the contest.

We will be visiting a local gym for some last minute preprations on the Thursday.

The Coaches will be aiming to take the boxers out for a meal after the weigh in on the Thursday evening. All families are welcome to come along.

The Hotel that we are staying in have all the details for the club boxers and families that have booked and paid through the club. Anyone that travels outside of this, will have to pay the hotels full rates and will have to supply their own transport during the weekend.

We will be travelling to the venue and back to the hotel together as a team on the Friday evening, again, all those that have paid their money through the club will get the travel free as well as free admission to the boxing show.

We would be hoping to stay on at the venue after to celebrate a good show from our squad..!

On The Saturday evening, we will be travelling by coach again to another venue as guests of the hosts at their Christmas party. The hosts have gone to a lot of trouble to put this on for us, so please attend.

2011 - 2012. Championship sucess for Billericay Boxers.

So far from 1st October up until now, there has been 2 Major Championships within the Amateur code.... The CYP Open Class Youth Championships and the Senior Novice Championships.

Billericay Boxing Club have had 2 boxers ( Conor Ward & Karl Davis ) box their way through to the highest levels in both...

Conor got through to the National Quarter Finals in the CYPs' and is currently in the National Semi Finals of the Novices.... Already Essex, Eastern Counties and Southern Areas Champion

Karl Davis made it to the National Finals of the CYPs, the ONLY Boxer to get this far from all the other entries from any Essex Club.... Already Essex, Eastern Counties and Southern Areas Champion.

Coming up, just after Christmas will be the National Open Class Schoolboy Championships and the Essex Junior Novice Tournament, Billericay have had a really strong squad for the last 4 years and we intend to build on our sucess with the help from the extra sessions over Christmas and the New Year.

However, you do not win a title if you are not disciplined outside the gym, Champions train night and day, in the gym and at home, Champions eat, sleep and live boxing...!

Parents / Carers Code of Conduct....

Billericay Boxer - Callum Smith survives the "Lions Den"

Callum Smith boxed at The Lion Boxing Club show this evening in London, against the unbeaten Maltese Schoolboy Kristan Brown from the home club.

Kristan boxed in a very similar style to the Lithuanian boxers that Cal sparred recently, so Cal used his international experience to good effect, with plenty of shots around the very tight guard of Kristan.

Cal looked very strong and determined and was not phased by literally fighting in the "Lions Den" atmosphere. We were on bout number 14, so a very long wait until cal got into action, but again, this did not phase Callum, as he took the waiting very casually.

Callum put in 150% and raised his game when needed to, insuring he got another good win under his belt.

1 bad point about this evening, Cal got whipped at snooker by both Brad and Les ( how embarrassing )

1 other good point, Cal's opponent came over after the bout and gave Cal a very friendly hand shake ( as did Kristans Dad ) very sportsman like from both and very respectful, which is how this sport should be.

Billericay Boxer - Conor Ward does it in style

Conor - Now only 2 bouts away from the FINAL.

Conor Ward won his Championship bout this evening in Folkstone after a very stressful day...!

There was a major road closed on the way to the bout, leaving Conor very little time to prepare after the weigh in and sitting in a car for an extended period on route to the venue.

However, did this phase Conor - NO...! Conor went into the bout with one of the favourites and demonstrated a master class in amateur boxing skills, something that all the coaches at the club would have been very proud to see.

Conor, boxed very smartly against one of the tidiest boxers from last seasons champioships, taking an early 1 point lead after the first round before increasing the margin with every round.

Well done Conor, 4 x 2 minute rounds and looking like he could do another 20.

Next stop, the National Quarter Finals in Oxon next Saturday.

Brad Cockett and Jack Lipton popped over to the Mighty Tilbury Dockers gym this evening, to take part in some open sparring, with one of the "hardest" clubs in the county...!

Tilbury Dockers always have a mixture of extremely strong and tough boxers, so it is no surprise that our boxers had a very hard night of sparring, but both lads done very well and came out from the gym with some valuable experience.

Thanks to Mick and the rest of the Dockers for their time and help this evening, all the Dockers made us feel very welcome. The Tilbury boys will be coming over to train with us on a Sunday morning soon.

Sparring went well at Chelmsford Boxing Club tonight

Conor Ward put in 4 x 3 minute rounds this evening and looked fit and strong enough to do another 10, Thanks to the superb David Moore for helping Con with his Championship preperations for Friday night.

George Stephenson had some tough sparring and came out of the ring with a smile on his face, so he obviously enjoyed himself.

Brett Venables showed just how important good footwork is and what an improvement it can make on your whole game, Brett was outstanding !

Billericay Boxer Karl Cruises to the National Finals.

Billericay Boxer Karl Davis reached the NATIONAL CYP Open Class Championship Finals today, after defeating Portsmouth and Southern Counties Regional Champion A. Steeves at The Mountbatten Sports Centre in Portsmouth in the National Semi Finals today.

Karl has been in great form recently, juggling school / college and work with a championship winning daily training schedule that has paid off ..!

Karl cruised to a 4 - 0 lead after dominating the first round, then upped the scores to 8 -2 after the second. Karl then used the ring size to his advantage in the third round, scoring with single clean shots before moving away fast to maintain a good lead without panicing the 2 corner men that were always very calm, collected and quiet as per usual. :)

Karl is a great kid, always training hard and focused on the job in hand, never shying away from the work that he has to do at home away from the gym to compete at such a high level.

Brilliant stuff Karl, a very proud day for everyone involved in the club, he is the ONLY boxer from Essex to get this far, another great day for Billericay ABC.

Karl was all set to get down the gym in the morning, preparing for his NATIONAL Final, until the coaches decided that he needs a day off to recharge.

Big thanks to everyone that travelled down to support Karl, so sorry about Wardy's singing last night, he has promised it won't happen again :)

Well done to all those Boxers that went to Chadwell this evening, they all performed well, against one of the strongest clubs in Essex.

The tough Chadwell Gym has turned out more National Champions than most clubs in the Eastern Counties over the years, so it is always a good measuring stick to see how our club are doing when sparring these boxers.

Good to see Luke Hasson tonight, coming out on his Birthday, willing to spar even though he was not totally well. We took the decision that he was not well enough to spar this evening, a tough call, but that is what our club is about - Making the right choices for the kids.
On our way over to Chadwell, Les asked Luke, "why did you come out on your birthday and you're not even 100% well" - Luke's reply was immediate - "Because this is my favourite sport"..! What a smashing kid, "Happy Birthday Luke" from all at Billericay ABC

NEW Essex ABA Competition Secretary - Les Cooke

The Essex ABA Executive Committee voted Billericay's Les Cooke in as the new Competition Secretary this evening at the monthly meeting, held at the Chelmsford Amateur Boxing Club.

Les will be matching all future shows for Essex ABA for the 2011-2012 season, trying to insure that ALL club boxers from around the county get a fair chance of boxing for the Essex ABA in team matches both home and away.

This will not affect the role of Les Cooke at Billericay ABC, the Billericay Club will still be bouting all over the country at short notice and are still aiming to go to Canada & New York at the end of this season. We are still going to Ireland next month.

Charlie Buffin - Boxes at the Highest Level for Essex.

Charlie Buffin took a huge step in his boxing career last night, when he represented Essex ABA v The North West London division of the ABA.

Charlie had his toughest bout to date against a very experienced and classy Zac Chaima from the top Finchley Boxing club.

Charlie was runner up in this bout on a points decision, but showed some great skills during the 3 rounds and done everyone proud. Zac is a fantastic boxer and Charlie would have learned a lot from this bout, as he prepares to enter the Junior ABA Championships early next year.

Pride, Passion and a real will to WIN..!

Karl Davis & Conor Ward reminded us all of what wearing a Billericay boxing vest meant today, when they both represented the club in the National Quarter Finals v LONDON in the CYP Open Class Championships.
Both boxers have trained hard inside and outside the gym, every night for the last few weeks. Showing how a disciplined boxer can go far in a championship against the very best in the country.
Karl came out on top this afternoon against George Day from the top Nenesis Boxing Club. Karl put everything he had into the last few weeks preperation, juggling school / college, work, late nights and early mornings, Karl has been determined and focussed on this bout since he knew the date.
Karl boxed very well never taking a backward step, well done Karl, this should be his year to become a National Champion.

Conor has also been hard at work recently, but still finding the extra time needed to be able to compete at the highest level. Conor was drawn against West Hams Jez Smith ( 3 times National Champion ). Conor who is still down as a novice boxer, stepped up a level and never looked to be out classed. Con kept calm, but just could not cope with Smiths unorthordox style. A very tough learning bout for Con, The decision went to Smith and there was no complaints.

Last word from the club coaches, someone recently wrote on here that these 2 lads are what the other boxers in the club should be aiming to simulate.
So lets see everyone training outside the gym "everyday" and putting in the effort that these 2 have recently.

Southern Areas CYP Champion - Conor Ward.

Well done Conor Ward, for a fantastic win and boxing display today in the Southern Areas Clubs for Young People Final.
Conor was up against the lad ( Crawley boxer Dale Smith ) that just pipped him to the decision last season. It was a big day for Conor and his very supportive family and friends too.
Round 1 - Con started well as did Dale, both looking cagey and picking their shots well, Con came back to the corner 1 point down ( 3-2 ).
Round 2 - Both boxers upped the pace and Smith edged his lead up more to a 2 point advantage ( 8-6 ).
Round 3 - Con was under no illussion, double attacks, plenty of them and give it 110%. Conor would not dissapoint anyone, with wave after wave of attacks, digging deep and never letting up. Con scored an amazing 9 shots in the last round, more than double what he had done over the first 2 rounds, before taking the win 17 - 12...!
A brilliant performance from Conor, another testiment that there is no substitute for hard training in and out of the gym and a true desire to win.

Thanks to everyone that came along to support Conor today, especially Andy, Dean, Kev, Tez and George.

Lets get a big crowd next week to support Conor & Karl.

The Squad was split 50/50 last night, 4 lads going to Norwich in a 3 hour drive picking up Kipper on route and 3 lads went to Colchester with Brad & Scott.

The boys in Norwich had their work cut out, all having tough bouts and boxing on soil that has always been very difficult for us to get a result that seems to reflect the bout.

Luke Hasson started the evening off with a tidy display in the skills bout. Luke picked his shots well and didn't waste too much, both boxers done very well.

Brad Cockett again started slower than his opponent, but by the time he had found 2nd gear, his opponent had lready nicked a few more points. However, we and the opponenets coaches thought that Brad had done just enough to win, unfortunately, the judges disagreed and Brad was to lose in a split decision by 1 point. A harsh learning curve for Brad and the others - When boxing away, start fast and finish faster, throw twice as many shots and never take a breather.

Brandon Fugl made his debut ( the first from the new boxers carded 2 weeks ago ) and was under clear instructions not to let the bout stay close, to win on ponits in some areas you need to win by a big margin to get the nod. Brandon started fast and stayed at full speed for all 3 rounds. Pressure, pressure, pressure was the intention as Brandon came forward, before getting a unanamous points win. Well done Brandon a good debut.

Jake Gibson was up against the home favourite and possibly everyone else in the hall. Jake came out at 100 miles an hour and picked the speed up even further as his will to win was what we have come to expect from a Billericay boxer..! Jake done everything right, fast combinations and quick and accurate counters on the backfoot. This kind of performance is where the whole club should be looking to go when out at away shows, fast, dedicated and fully focused on winning your bout. Again, the decision didn't go Jakes way, but that is no reflection on Jakes performance. Jake has matured a lot over the last 4 months as a boxer and a person and was to be congratulated on his all round performance. To date - "Bout of the Season"..!

Further south Scott and Brad were at the colchester show with Jack, Tez and Brett.

Brett was in a skills bout against a boxer from the ever popular and fast rising Sudbury club and performed well.

Tez was up against a Castle boxer from Colchester, the bout was quite tight but Tez got the nod, well done tez.

Jack Lipton took a bout at short notice and settled down in the 2nd and 3rd round to just be pipped by a points decision.

The gym was packed this evening, full of parents, friends and family of the young boxing club members. The skills and determination from everyone that took part in the King of the Ring tournament was breathtaking.

Billy Adams took the major title, King of the Ring supreme skills champion 2011-2012, his first title and I am sure the start of many more to come, well done Billy.

Henry, Bailey, George & Cory all took the runner up positions after lengthy discussions with the Judges.

The other 34 competitors were all equally fantastic, showing everyone that boxing in our gym is about skill as well as courage.

Ted done a few rounds and no nose bleeds, that's a first..!

Joe Adams performed well as did the rest of the carded squad, well done all.

Jack Lipton done 8 rounds with no low blows, however, i am not sure i beleive that..!

Callum was looking very sharp, but casual at the same time. We are working on getting him bouts as we speak, what a great little boxer.

Little George and Frank, what a bout that would make, the gym was "very noisy" with that one :)

Conor & Karl - No opponents in todays C.Y.P youth amateur boxing championships.

Conor Ward & Karl Davis both weighed in for the Anglian round of the CYP Championships today in Harlow, however, there was no opponents at their weight to box, so they both received walkovers to the next round.
Both lads are very fit and on weight, they have trained hard and I sincerley beleive they will both go all the way..!
Conor is also entered into the Senior Novice U20 Championships and should be looking to get at least 2 National titles before Christmas..!
More details will follow on the diary when we have them.

Thursday 20th October - King of the Ring 2011.

On Thursday, we will be having our annual King of the Ring skills competition, at the gym. Weigh in 6pm - 7pm.

The Club will be open for all parents and friends to come and watch the boxers demonstrate their boxing skills between 7pm - 9pm.

We have a cup for the overall winner and a medal for everyone that takes part, so please come and support the boxers and the club.

We are planning to take the competiton squad on a trip of a lifetime next year to Canada & New York, to box in at least 2 competitions over a 6 day tour, so we are actively looking for business's to sponsor us. If you can help, please contact Michael Ward at the gym on Thursday.

A mixed start for the Billericay Boxers.

Three Boxers were out today in the first big shows of the new season.

Conor Ward weighed in for the Essex round of the Senior Novice ( U20 ) bout Championships at Harlow. There was no other person to challenge Conor, so he received the Walk Over into the next round, which will be the Eastern Counties ( Essex / Suffolk / Norfolk / Cambridgeshire ) Finals. A strange way to become the Essex Champion, but as my Grandad used to say - "you can only fight the person that is in front of you"..!

Brad Cockett was on another show in Harold Hill at the 5 Star Boxing Gym. Brad who was being sick on Tuesday, took a skills bout at very short notice to help out the hosts, to allow them to get one of their boxers on their show. Brad started a bit quicker than usual, and certainly faster than in Lithuania ( haha ).
The bout was very even and if there was going to be a point decision, it would have been very hard to seperate a winner.
Well done Brad for stepping up at short notice.

George Stephenson was also on the Harold Hill show and was up against the very strong and unbeaten Joe Guilbert from the host club. George again, only had a few days notice, but took the bout and was well prepared. We had seen Guilbert box recently and had a technical game plan that George followed to the letter. Unfortunately, the bout that was very close was awared to Guilbert on a split decision.
Personally as a coach, I was very pleased with Georges performance ( technically ) and George has asked for a rematch, so he can take something from this - As we all do.

A further 9 members joined the " Elite " Squad of carded boxers at the Lake Meadows Gym last night after passing the strict medical exam.
The Billericay coaches will be working alongside the new recruits to get them all ready to represent the club as soon as possible. Most will be boxing just after Christmas.

However one of the newbies ( Brandon ) will make his debut in the Billericay vest next week in Norwich, we will keep you informed of his progress.

Female boxer Jessica will be looking to make her debut in January, this will be another first for the club and hopefully will help encourage more females to take up the sport.

Club Competition Secretary Les Cooke was the first in Essex to ever get an all female bout matched on an amateur boxing show in the county several years back, since then the 2 females ( Rebecca Donnoly & Liah Flintham ) have both become National Open Class Champions and have represented England on numerous occasions.

Great Britain has secured its best ever medal haul at the World Amateur Boxing Championships, after finishing with three silver medals and one bronze in an agonising final day as Luke Campbell (St Paul's ABC, Hull), Andrew Selby (Wales) and Anthony Joshua (Finchley ABC, London) were all narrowly denied gold in a series of close contests.

At flyweight, the Welsh European Champion, Andrew Selby, lost-out 13-12 to the world number one, Misha Aloyan from Russia. In the final bout of the tournament, London’s Anthony Joshua, was narrowly outpointed 22-21 by Magonedrasul Medzhidov from Azerbaijan in an explosive super-heavyweight contest in front of a passionate home crowd. In between, Hull’s Luke Campbell was edged-out 14-10 by Cuba’s Lazaro Alvarez in the bantamweight final.

The trio were joined in today’s podium ceremonies by Liverpool’s Tom Stalker who won bronze in the light-welterweight division.

The four medal haul is the best-ever performance by a GB Boxing team at the World Championships and tops the three medals won in Chicago in 2007. The team also qualified boxers in five of the weight categories for the 2012 Olympic Games.

GB Boxing’s Performance Director, Rob McCracken said: “The team has put in a superb performance and to come away with four medals and five Olympic qualifying places is a fantastic achievement that augurs very well for success at 2012.

“It is unprecedented for British boxers to contest three finals in the World Championships, it’s just a shame that we were unable to come away with a gold as all of the boxers put in fantastic performances today, as they have done throughout the tournament. They have shown they are among the very best in the world and should be proud of their achievements.”

21-year-old, super-heavyweight, Anthony Joshua, said: “It’s been an amazing week and to qualify for the Olympics and make the final of the World Championships in only my second major international is incredible. It’s been a brilliant learning curve and the focus now is on London and getting down to some serious work in the gym and making sure I go one better at the Olympics.”

Luke Campbell added: “If you had said to me beforehand that I'd get the silver and qualify for the Olympics I'd probably have taken it, however I am disappointed not to have won the gold, because I thought I had the better of the bout. I wanted to be the World Champion, however I have had a great tournament and secured a place at London and with the backing of the home crowd I am sure I can go one better in 2012.

Well what a weekend!!

It all started on Friday morning with a with a 4:30 a.m. meet at Stansted with more than a few looking sorry for themselves at having to be up at 2 a.m. A couple of coffees later and the team were ready to board the flight to Latvia, well all except Les and Jake! (just managed to get there in the end though eh Les!)

Upon arrival and after rounding up the team to go and collect the minibuses, the team began to wake up, after a stop for some lunch it was a 2 hour drive to Vasalys in Lithuania.

Arriving at our destination we headed straight to the gym to check out the opposition, we had half been expecting some tin hut in a field but couldn't have been more wrong. Inside was a state of the art gymnasium with an indoor sprint track and a ring that wouldn't look out of place in Caesars Palace !

After being introduced to the Coaches ( one of whom was an Olympian ) we spent a few minutes checking out their boxers training and I think more than a few within the team at this point were getting a little nervous ! These guys are no fools and were obviously very well schooled amateur boxers. We returned to the bus to be shown when our villas were (in the middle of nowhere!)

Arriving at our Villas and expecting the worst we couldn't have been more wrong, all I can say is WOW !!! what a place to spend the weekend, 2 wooden Villas set on a river bank complete with wood burning ovens, bbq, sauna and hot tub. To say we were pleasantly surprised is an understatement, aside from a few bits needing a clean we had the perfect base to keep 15 young boxers entertained for the weekend.

Team Bean (Chris Kelly, Karl Davis, Joe Cooke, Conor Ward) claimed the first Villa as their base and we deployed "the Kipper" into the same Villa (to keep some sort of order !) the remaining juniors were housed in the main Villa with Les, Brad, Mick, Shaun, Kev and Dean. It was at this point the junior team formulated their attack plan on Team Bean and their headquarters, this included water bombs stealing of key items of clothing and general terrorising. Team Bean closed ranks and fought back during the weekend but had to concede defeat due to the relentless stealthy attacks from the juniors during the whole weekend!

The first evening's entertainment was a barbecue by the riverside cooked up by the Dads and coaches and was a great evening for all despite Brad buying 24 litres of vinegar he mistook for water and a case of non alcoholic lager for the dads! (at least we all had clear heads in the morning!)

Saturday after a good breakfast it was off to the gym for a warm-up prior to the sparring starting at midday. Now it was time to hand over to the boys of Billericay to do what they do best, I'll let the coaches report on the individual performances, but let me just say that any anxiety of boxing these Lithuanians was quickly put to bed and the Eastern European coaches began to sit up and take notice of what these boys from Essex were demonstrating! After a light lunch the boys set off on a run from the villa and back for some swimming in the river.

Saturday night was another barbecue at the riverside with the boys relaxing with a sauna and hot tub before getting into bed.

After breakfast Sunday back to the gym for a warm up prior to another round of sparring, it was clear they had saved some of the best to last with boxers including national champions drafted in the box. Our boys again dug deep and did all of us proud with some excellent boxing, the support from the team mates of those boxing, the trainers and the dads during the bouts was phenomenal and shows what a fabulous tight knit team we have and I for one felt humbled and proud to be part of that experience.

Sunday evening was a meal at a local restaurant before returning to the villa for a "court hearing" which bought charges against every member on the trip. The prosecution was expertly devised and presented by Kevin Everard and overseen by the "Judge" Shaun Hasson, the evening was hilarious with various sentences being handed out including having to wear a head guard for the whole of the following day! Everyone had a great evening and accepted whatever decision was made about their "crime" (Mick Ward you are a legend!)

Monday morning was another session in the gym with some hard circuit training with Sergeant Major Everard screaming at them!

After an end of tour fry up cooked by Brad and Dean it was a couple of hours jumping off of bridges into the river and a sauna before the journey back to Riva tired and ready to go home we boarded the plane except Les and Jake!!! (just made it in the end though...) landing back at Stansted just before midnight.

All in all what a trip and what a team !!

Boxing Report from Les Cooke.

Luke Hasson.
DAY 1... Luke was called up, Les immediately thought something was up, as his opponent was about 3 ft taller and the words "stitch up" was being banded around. Luke had no worries, he got in the ring, head down and straight to bussiness, launching attacks to the exposed body and actually surprised every single person in the gym. What a way to start and to lift the Billericay Boys..!
DAY 2... Luke also sparred on the Sunday, doing another fine job, moving in and out scoring and not picking up, looking very confident and staying calm. Luke has picked up a tidy little style which always looks pleasing to watch.
I had a call from Luke's Dad today, Luke was sent home from school with a throat infection, so it just goes to show, that Luke may not have been 100% well but still boxed brilliant, so what is this kid going to be like this season when he is 100%. What a prospect..!

Tez Everard.
DAY 1... Tez's opponent wasted no time, as their coaches had seen Lukes boxing skills and decided that the best way to try and beat a Billericay Boxer was to rush in and overpower us - What a mistake..!
Tez covered up and countered well picking his shots in between the dozens of blows bouncing off of his arm, before his opponent had done his worst, then Tez was now ready to show them what he had in his armoury. Tez unlaunched some heavy shots that actually had his opponent spinning round. The Lithuanian lad was very brave, but Tez was just far too strong and Tez totally dominated him before being asked by his corner to pull up.
DAY 2... Tez was in with 2 very fast lads, one from Lithuania and one that had travelled over from Estonia. I think the Estonian lad had wished he had stayed at home, he obviously did not see what happened the day before, If you upset Tez, then you've gotta face the consiquences ( and he did ). Tez put in another 3 rounds that had the Estonian pulling out and the poor Lithuanian had to finish the final round with a billericay boy that had at last started to beleive in himself after seeing just how good he really is.

George Stephenson.
DAY 1... George looked to have drawn a really strong and skillfull boxer, very fast with some hard hitting combinations. George at no time was phased and easily match everything his opponent had to offer. George is without doubt one of the most improved in the gym lately and really showed just what a great prospect he is, with another strong display.
DAY 2... The home team had looked at our boys from day one and rematched all the lads with new opponents for day 2, George had put in a quality display and was given an opponent that was the lithuanian ranked 2 in the schoolboy rankings. Early on, George had a lot of shots firing at him from all angles until he changed gear and turned things around. George lead off and stamped his authority down showing that a Billericay 1 bouter can mix it up with the best. Well done george a very goos performance.

Brad Cockett.
DAY 1... Brad was match against the current Latvian National Schoolboy Champion, that had travelled over to take part in what they thought would be a very easy spar against a 1 bout boxer from a small club from England. Brads opponent was being watched by almost everyone in the gym as he was meant to be the next big thing. He has won the Latvian National Schoolboy titles, two years in succesion.
Brad looked very nervous to start with, the coaches had told him, it was going to be tough and had prepared Brad for this.
The first 2 rounds were pretty even, but the Latvian was looking like he was going to be too much until Brad got the Billericay corner talk that was needed and the whole squad of boxers behind him, Brad raised his game, changed from first gear to overdrive and absolutely dominated the 3rd round, a performance that would have seen the bout stopped in Brads favour if the bout had a 4th round.
After the bout, the National coach came to find out how bouts Brad has had, he was absolutely blown away when he was told, Brad has had 1 bout..! Fantastic stuff from a future champion..!
DAY 2... We thought that Brad would never have a tougher bout than day 1, but then steps in the Estonian National Champion and a very good Lithuanian boxer that had Brad really digging deep. Brad started fast this time and handled both extremly well, At no point did brad look uncomfortable against these experienced boys. Well done Brad.

Callum "Casual" Smith.
DAY 1... Cal got into the ring with another 2 boxers, one of which was the current Lithuanian Schoolboy Champion, a very very classy southpaw and an experienced boxer with over 30 bouts to his name that seemed to have an answer for every move in the book for the first 2 rounds. Cal settled down and got better as the rounds went on, dominating agaist the first boxer from Estonia, before finally working out how to call the southpaw in and make him make the mistakes that was needed for Cal to land his own back hand. It was something from the gym, training ground, making the counter boxer miss and countering him back fast and hard. Another hard, but brilliant display from the casual. Cal looked as if he had matured during every round and gained valuable experience and learned as he went.
DAY 2... Cal was in again with 2 others, Cal really looked as if he had learned so much from the first day, he now was cruising picking his shots and moving like someone with much more experience. The southpaw opponent was caught flush a few times by Cal who completely dominated once he was in his rythmn.

Ted ( Captain ) Brand.
DAY 1... Ted was given many nicknames during the weekend, but his full on, never give up, relentless style in the ring gained him the respect and admiration from all the Billericay team, International boxers, coaches and supporters. Ted was in with Lithuania's unbeaten 12 bout boxer that had to admit to being put on the backfoot for most of the bout. Ted had everyone in the gym up on the feet screaming and shouting, what a battler..! What a way to get your team fired up. Well done Cap.
DAY 2... Well what can be said about this battle - Ted is hoping to join the Paras when he leaves school, I have seen many Para boxing before and Ted will fit in perfectly ( haha ). I have a note from one of the spectators from ringside that took notes, all it said was WOW F****** GREAT FIGHT...! Say no more...!

Joe Adams.
DAY 1... Joe is a boxer that has improved substantially lately, especially after the June dinner show. Joe was was matched with a very strong lad, Joe didn't let this phase him and stood up for the task in hand. Joe started to keep the sparring at long range after the Lithuanian continually looked for the huge bodyshots on the ropes. Joe started to turn his opponent before countering with some quality shots of his own.
DAY 2... Joe was drawn against a Lithuanian ranked 3 in the country and his own teammate Joe Giles.
The Lithuanian looked very strong at first until Joe settled again, boxing at long range and trying to keep a good diatance to get in the cleaner shots.
Then it started - Joe Adams v Joe Giles - The first half of the round was a team mates touch spar until instructed by their corners to "pick the pace up". What a cracker and deserved a rematch, which they had on the 3rd day, still staying at a scoring of 6 all.
Well done to both Joes, 2 very nice kids that kept everyone busy during the weekend.
I think i heard someone say, the 3rd match will be at the Lake Meadows gym .... Soon.

Jake Gibson.
After almost making ons of the coaches miss the flight, Jakes bouts were always going to be a bit tougher ( Jokes haha ).
DAY 1... The atmosphere in the gym was tense, the nerves were kicking in and Jake was no exception. For everyone was feeling this, a long way from home, no creature comforts, no one to talk to about how you really feel, what a great way to test these yougsters out. Our total respect goes out to everyone of them for getting up there and boxing. It takes guts to do this, something that can sometimes so easily be forgotten.
Jake looked white climbing through the ropes and had a very steady first 2 rounds, then again like many of the others realised just how good they really are, Jakes 3rd round saw his confidence rise and his power come up with it. Well done Jake, a quality performance, if only there were another 2 rounds.
DAY 2... Jake was now feeling confident after a very long first day. Jake was the last spar of the 2nd day and looked like he was enjoying every second of it, a much more confident display all round and a very skillful display against another tough Lithuanian.

Joe Giles.
DAY 1... Joe was another lad that had experienced the extra anxiety that comes with boxing in a foreign country and not having any familiar surroundings, but knuckled down to it on the first day against a very heavy handed opponent. Joe did well.
DAY 2... Joe was like many of the others, nursing a small injury and suffering from the syndrome that is called late nights. early start sickness. Joe was very nervous on day 2, but knuckled down and put in another good performance against 2 boxers, one of which was Joe Adams. Joe giles done well again and can feel proud of himself for having the courage to do what he done, a smashing kid with a good sense of fun, well done Beiber.

Charlie - George Buffin.
DAY 1... Charlie has been nusing an injury so we put him on selective punching only and thank god for his opponents we did. Charlie was awesome, getting shots from all angles, his opponent didn't realy know where or when the shots where coming from.
DAY 2... Charlie was asked to try and land a few right screw shows and uppercuts, again The Lithuanians couldn't work charlie out, he looked as if he was boxing in their close up style, but in reality Charlie was boxing at long range with very fast attacks that got him inside and away like a stealth bomber.

Conor Ward.
DAY 1... Conor smashed his Estonian opponent in 1 round..!
DAY 2... Conor was matched up against a National Lithuanian Schoolboy Champion, this opponent was drafted in after they saw what Conor was capable of from day 1.
Conor was smaller than his opponent, saw had to work had to get close, but when he was in range, he fired in some shots that landed with a sting. A great performance from another top ranked UK Boxer.

Jake Robinson.
DAY 1... Jake was another who had to face a Lavian National Champion, his opponent was very experienced and didn't take long to start digging in his back hand, as Jakes eye, soon found out. Jake stepped up his work rate and managed to even things out but would have picked up some valuable experience from this lad.
DAY 2... There was no let up for Jake, he had another ranked boxer, number 3 in Lithuania, Jake kept the strong Lithuanian at bay and kept on his toes, picking his shots well. Jake was shocked at how strong and fit these Eastern Europeans were but done himself and us all proud for digging deep and giving a very good performance.

Karl Davis
DAY 1... Karl was up against the experienced and very confident Lithuanian who was obviously frustrated that he could not get close to Karl and thought it would be a good idea to drop his hands and showboat, theen the biggest cheer of day one was when Karl landed a backhand bang on his chin (haha ). Karls opponent was trying the spoiling tactics on Karl, with every dirty trick in the book. Karls cornerman got into the fight and gave Karl some "very amusing" words of encoragement.
DAY 2... Karl had another battle, but this time the oppenent was a boxer and both done very well, Karl dominated all 3 rounds and did not take a backward step.

Joe Cooke
DAY 1... Joe was encouraged to do well from his team mates with the promise of a good evenings entertainment if he done well. One Lithuanian was the current Schools Champion and the other was a Latvian Champion. Joe kept calm on his toes and managed to get 3 rounds under his belt, without either doing too much.
DAY 2... Joe picked the pace up a touch over 2 rounds, as this was all we were going to get from him. His opponet was a 3 times Lithuanian Open Class Junior Champion and European Meadalist. Joe stayed up on his toes and manged to land a few quality shots and picked up 1 right his self.

Chris Kelly.
DAY 1...Chris sparred 2 boxers on day one and slowly started to dominate both. Chris had started to beleive in himself now and by the 3rd round everyone could see the confirdence boost so needed, had finalled arrived.
DAY 2... Chris was like a different person, he couldn't wait to get in there and get started, a brilliant performance that had his opponent, who was last years Schools champion wobbling on more than 1 occasion. Well done Chris, another fantastic and confident display which was long overdue.

Final word - This team of boxers went into the lions den, they faced possibly the hardest bunch of boxers you would ever meet and came out victorious, each and every one of them...!
The coaches and support staff were all amazing.
Thanks to the parents of the boxers for allowing them to have the oppotunity to go - Roll on Dublin in December.
